Back from America and a new album out!

The tour in America with Slate Dump was amazing and I have a lot of photos, videos and music to share on this blog.  For now though, the first thing I'll share is a link to my latest release.

When me and Slate Dump were on tour we recorded live on KAOS Radio Austin for the Smooth and Demented Show and we decided to release it on Cheap Wine Records.

It's a FREE download or if you would like to help support independent music, you can buy a hard copy for £4.50.

Here is a write up the host of the show did for the album

Scottish bluesman Sleepy Eyes Nelson walked into KAOS radio with his punk/folk touring companion Slate Dump. These two men were on a mission.  Bring honest, DIY style music to the American south while paying homage at some of the great and historic blues  locations along the way ...like the memorials of Lightnin' Hopkins , Hasil Adkins ,Ledbetter and ol' John Henry .
( Maybe fire a few cheeseburgers into their guts while they were at it!)

This recording of Slate Dump and Sleepy Eyes Nelson live on KAOS radio perfectly captures the independent, rebellious quality found in darker corners of today's underground country-blues world.  The authentic and well crafted blues of Sleepy Eyes Nelson along with the uncompromising acoustic punk of Slate Dump  was form fit for the anti-establishment sprit we hold dear at KAOS radio.
I hope you enjoy listening to these two talented musicians as much as I enjoyed recording them.

-El Demento

Just about to leave for America!

I've been busy with some gigs just before I head out on tour to America.  I played at The Blues Shakedown in London which was a really cool night for blues dancers.  I then supported Dave Arcari and Jim Dead at King Tuts, a wee gig in Kilmarnock called The Crop of Ayrshire which was good for me because it's just down the road and not far to travel for a change and I played the blues night in Slouch in Glasgow, which is a great wee venue and hopefully I'll be back to play again sometime.  I've met lots of really nice people on my travels so far this year and I'm sure I'm going to meet a lot more.  I head for America on Monday morning for the tour with Slate Dump which I'm sure is going to be amazing.

I've posted some photos that have been taken at some of the gigs, check them out!

I had a really busy weekend playing the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival, The Edinburgh Carnival and The Ale House Festival Weekender.  It was a really good crowd and I managed to sell all my CD's.  Here's a photo of me playing the Mardi Gras at The Grassmarket.

This is a video of me playing Blonde Snapper from the bog at Cannon Bone Cottage in Ayrshire.  There is going to be a Scottish Blues Compilation put together soon and I was asked to send a track so I think I'll send Blonde Snapper, it's a song about the recent Greyhound Derby winner.  Give it a wee watch!

Latest News, Live Reviews, Cannon Bone Cottage and More!!

It's been a busy time recently and I have a good few things I'd like to post on here.

Here is a wee live review taken from the latest issue of Blues Matters Magazine.  It's from a gig at The Ale House in Edinburgh back in January from the Graveyard Full Of Blues Tour with Craig Hughes.
I've also done some live recordings from The Bog in Cannon Bone Cottage in Ayrshire! Click the links below to watch some of the songs I did.

On Friday the 13th I played a couple of gigs in Glasgow and I had a top time! The first gig was at The 13th Note and a live review has turned up from that gig. Here is the link to the review of the night!

On the same night I also played at The Roxy on Great Western Road which was another great wee gig.  I really enjoyed playing again with Jim Dead and Craig Hughes.  A live recording was taken from the night, check it out!

I'd also like to post a really cool picture that my friend Jimmy McLeary did of me which I plan on making into a T-Shirt.

I'm also really pleased to say that I have a three week American tour with my friend Slate Dump coming up later this year!! It will start on September 17th.  This will be my second trip to America to play and I really can't wait.  This tour will be much bigger than the last one and we have a lot of places planned.  It's gonna be a blast!!
I also have many more gigs coming up here in Scotland plus a gig down in London for the first time.  I'll post more info on that in the coming weeks!

And last thing again away from the music.
Anyone who knows me will know how much I love Greyhounds and that I have an adopted Greyhound myself.  His name is Ronan. April is adopt a Greyhound month so I thought I'd Post some pictures of me and Ronan hanging around together.  This is very much what me and him do when I'm not out playing gigs.

Sickness blues, some videos and gig information!

This month I had to cancel a gig in Aberdeen because I was unwell.  I hate having to cancel any gigs and I was really gutted about this one.  These things happen.  It's not all bad news though, when April starts I'll be playing at Pivo Pivo in Glasgow with some amazing acts, this is one I'm really looking forward to!  Here's the poster.

I'm also heading to Edinburgh to play at The Jazz Bar on the 8th of April and playing back in Glasgow at The Roxy on Great Western Road with Jim Dead and Craig Hughes on the 13th.  I'm looking forward to these gigs.

I should also be on the radio in April with a wee slot on the Switchback Show on Sunny Govan Radio. Sunny Govan Radio have always supported me and been very kind to me over the years, having me on their show, playing my songs and spreading the word about my music.  I'm really looking forward to going back on, it's always a good laugh.

Since I just started feeling better I've been straight into doing more recording and today I did some videos. They are my versions of some old country blues songs I like.  I've been meaning to do these for some time now so here they are

New split album with the great Slate Dump and more recording.

I've still been hiding away recording in my house and I'm going to post more new videos on here when I do them.  I'm also going to post some live stuff I've found from previous gigs I've played but for now here is a link to a new song I did recently.

http://youtu.be/Xjeq56rM6uY

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with all these new songs, maybe I could use them for a wee split again with someone.  If anyone is interested in doing a split cd please get in touch.

Speaking of new split albums, the new split with the great West Virginia Songster Slate Dump will be available for a FREE download from the Scottish Independent Label Cheap Wine Records very soon.  It's a follow up to the first split we did and we're very happy to make it another free download for you all.  Here is the artwork done by the very talented Katharine Cameron, who also did the artwork for the first release.

This is a video of me and Slate Dump doing Scrounger Blues on a porch in West Viginia.  Another American Tour is being planned together so hopefully we will get some more stuff like this done.

Shut Away Recording Wth The February Blues

This month so far has been spent shut away recording.

When I was in Memphis my pal Slate Dump took me to Gus's Fried Chicken.  He said the fried chicken at Gus's was the best and he wasn't wrong.  So I did a song about Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken.

This other song I've done was written by a friend of mine from Texas Mike Snow.  Mike has been writing a few songs for me over the last while.  Mike sends me the words and I put the music to it.  It's something I really like doing.

This song is called Down The Line Blues and It's the first song written by Mike that I've done on the slide.

This next one is my version of an old song called Take Me Back.

Graveyard Full Of Blues Tour 2012

2012 kicked off with a bang with The Graveyard Full Of Blues Tour with Craig Hughes!

The first night was a great wee gig at The State Bar in Glasgow which has been a regular spot for me and Craig over the years. It's one of my favourite places to play so it was a good way to start the tour.  We were joined by Tragic O' Hara and Jim Dead.  I have played with Tragic a couple of times before and he's a fine musician and a top guy and he played a great set!  It was the first gig I've played with Jim Dead and he played a top set of songs and I hope to see more of him in the future.  A good drink was had and I caught the last train back down the road to Ayrshire, although I did plan on catching an earlier one but these things happen.  The last train on a Friday is normally torture and full of crazies so it's always good to try and get some drink to help get you through the madness on the way back down the road, so i took care of business in the station by smuggling out a couple of bottles of beer from the bar at Glasgow Central.

The next stop was Edinburgh at Ale House on the Saturday night.  Another fine wee gig which me and Craig played much longer sets than we normally do.  But we took care of things and really enjoyed our time.

We eventually got to Montrose on the Sunday after a train journey from hell. The night was put together by The Rag N Bone Man and it was another good night.  The Rag n Bone Man is a one man band who played a great set and I really enjoyed catching him play for the first time.  Hopefully I will see more of him down this way soon.

Overall the tour was a success!  A big thanks to the venues for having us and also to the acts who played with us and also a massive thanks to Brian for giving us a lift back from Edinburgh and Montrose which made life a lot easier for us.  Loads of fun was had and I hope we can do it again sometime soon.  I know Craig has more videos of the tour and I think he might be making a short video of things so when he puts it together i'll post it on here.

The pic on the left was taken in The Northern Vaults on the Sunday.

This video is from the first night of the tour at The State Bar.  This song "My Razor"  will be on a new album I plan on recording later in the year.

It has to be said the sound in the State Bar was excellent so a big thanks to Craig for helping out with it both on the Friday and the Saturday through in Edinburgh.  I am hopeless with these things.

The other video is also from The State Bar gig.  The song "Power Cut Blues"  is on the recent split cd I did with C.J. Marie.  You can download it from Cheap Wine Records and it's FREE!

All my releases can be found on Cheap Wine Records

Review Of My Album "Where The Town Ends" in Blues Matters Magazing 2012

2011 was a very busy year with many gigs and festivals being played over Scotland and also an American Tour with my good friend from West Virginia Slate Dump who i did a split album with called Covered In Blues!  I did a full length album called Where The Town Ends and it won the award for best UK Blues Album of the year with The Blues Underground Network.  I've been busy playing gigs to promote it and will continue to do so for most of 2012.

I did so much in 2011 it's hard to go into anymore detail but I intend to keep a more up to date account of things from now on.

Now 2012 has started, I have recieved a review from Blues Matters magazine for my latest full release "Where The Town Ends"  available from Cheap Wine Records.

I have also just finished another split album with C.J. Marie called Trouble Comes Around which has five songs of us each and is a FREE download!

Many more releases are planned, including a Covered In Blues Vol 2 with Slate Dump and a new full length album later in the year.

While i have lots of recording planned I will also be playing many more gigs around Glasgow, festivals and maybe another tour abroad.

I have just completed a weekend tour with Craig Hughes to promote our split album "Graveyard Full Of Blues" and I'll post some live videos from that soon.
